Over 200 protesting students were marching towards Deputy Commissioner office to submit memorandum in connection with scholarship issue.
When they reached new Baradari garden, police tried to stop them following which verbal duel erupted between police and protesting students.
When students remained adamant, police resorted to mild cane charge, a police official said adding that some students had even "pushed" some police officials on the spot.
In the melee, a few student sustained injuries with one student complained of fracture who along with other students were admitted to local hospital.
Later, students enraged over the lathicharged even blocked the traffic at Chandigarh chowk for more than one hour, causing huge traffic jam on the highway.
Students of three private colleges lifted the blockade after district officials assured to resolve their issue at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh condemned the "brutal" lathicharge by the police on students, which left several of them seriously injured, while they were demanding scholarships.
In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder demanded strict action against the officials responsible for resorting to such "brute force" against the peaceful students and an apology from the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal for the "brutal police excesses" today.
