Prof Swagata Sen has taken charge as the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Gour Banga in Malda district.
Sen said he took charge on Friday as the acting VC.
"I will be discharging responsibility for another six months," he said.
Sen had been appointed as VC by higher education department for a period of six months, a department official said.
Sen, who was earlier the Pro-VC (Academic) of Calcutta University, was appointed after Gopal Chandra Mishra resigned from the post of Vice-Chancellor.
Mishra had resigned following agitation by members of the youth wing of a political party at the university campus on November 13 midnight.
