Take science to the masses: Hooda

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said it is essential for developing countries like India to take science to the masses, especially the rural areas.
The scientific community and academics should inculcate scientific temper among the masses and improve the knowledge-base of rural communities, the Chief Minister said, speaking after inaugurating a 3-day International Geographical Union Conference on Geo-Informatics for Biodiversity and Climate Change at Mahrishi Dayanand University in Rohtak today, an official release said here.
More than 500 delegates from countries like USA, Russia, Japan, Australia, Iran and Ethiopia are participating in the international conference.
It is a matter of pride that the IGU conference is being held after 1921 in India and Haryana has been given the honour to host it, Hooda said, adding that the scientific community, which is responsible for generating most of the brilliant ideas, must learn to share them, regardless of geographical or political boundaries.

"Because, in my view, the importance and relevance of every great idea has to be tested at the touchstone of its utility for the 'consumers' of technology. The readymade example before us is the technology of mobile phones that has revolutionised our lives," he added.
President of International Geographical Union Prof Vladimir Kolossov said that issues of bio-diversity and climatic change were very important for humanity and development of modern technology could meet these challenges.
