Replying to a short notice question of BJP's Baidyanath Prasad in the Legislative Council, Minister In-charge Home Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said in some cases courts have given punishment to the accused in record time.
A person was given death sentence within a week of trial in a rape case registered with Barari police station of Katihar district and another three accused were awarded death sentence within 22 days in a rape case in Saharsa district, he said.
In reply to another question, the minister said since 2006 the NDA government in the state by way of speedy trial in 36,270 cases helped in punishing 79,260 people involved in heinous crimes like massacres and under SC & ST Act.
Replying to a question by CPI MLC Kedarnath Singh, he said there was shortage of judges in the lower judiciary but cases were being disposed of through speedy trial.
