The girl has been referred to a Kolkata Hospital after being given few stitches, Panihati hospital sources said today.
Biswajit Mondal (21), who was trying to flee after attacking the girl, was caught and thrashed by the mob. He was later handed over to the police.
A senior police officer said the teenage girl was passing by when the youth followed her for some distance before intercepting her and slashing her throat.
Alerted by the girl's screams, locals rushed to her help and took her to the nearby Panihati State General Hospital.
Biswajit's family claimed he had an affair with her but the girl's parents denied, alleging she was being harassed by the youth for spurning his advances.
The district has witnessed attacks on women at Kamduni, Barasat, Madhyamgram and Jagaddal triggering protests by rights groups.
