"We are planning to launch a third platform at the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station where few trains will start and terminate," South Eastern Railway General Manager Radhey Shyam, who holds additional charge of Metro Railway, said here today.
It was an initiative to cut down on the rush added after the Metro Railways extension to Garia Bazar in August 2009 and then till New Garia in October 2010, Metro officials said.
"Overcrowding has been a major issue since extension of the Metro took place. It not only makes ride for an individual uncomfortable, but also takes toll on the rakes. In fact, during rush hours trains often carry 30 per cent more people than their capacity," a Metro Railway official said.
Meanwhile, the South Eastern Railway today initiated Railyatri Upbhokta Pakhwada (Passenger and Customer Facilitation Fortnight) from May 26 to June 9 as part of a nationwide campaign to focus on better amenities and services.
"During the fortnight drive, we will take note of quality of various facilities and demand of the passengers. Our focus will be on safety awareness, punctuality, public amenities and other steps taken by the Railways," he said.
Radhey Shyam would visit Tatanagar station on June 8 to personally interact with passengers and other stakeholders to know their problems and suggest necessary solutions.
The General Manager interacted with passengers during a train ride from Howrah to Santragachi this morning. He was accompanied by Chief Commercial Manager Gouri Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager, Kharagpur, Goutam Banerjee and some other senior officials of the SER.
