Three youths were feared to have drowned in a canal near the Haiderpur water treatment plant in outer Delhi as they went missing after going for a swim in its waters, police said.
The incident took place last evening when the youths, aged between 18 to 25 years, had gone to take a bath in the canal. Locals had called the police after hearing what they said were cries for help coming from the canal.
Police referred the matter to the fire department which then launched a rescue operation. However, despite several teams joining the search for the trio, the youths remained untraced till Tuesday evening.
"Three teams of firefighters, along with divers, are trying to track them. The first team was sent to the spot immediately. When it failed to track the boys despite searching for four hours, another team was rushed. A third team was sent after 10 more hours, when the first two teams reported that they could not find the boys,", said Delhi Fire Services official.
Officials said that they may put in more resources tomorrow if the youths have not been found till then.
The youths remained unidentified as locals said that they had very recently moved to the Samai Pur Badli area and nobody properly knew their names.
On Monday, some of them had seen the trio diving into the canal and had later heard their cries for help.
The canal starts in Haryana and passes through the back- side of the Haiderpur water treatment plant. It comes under the Delhi Jal Board and supplies water to a large part of the national capital, especially north and south Delhi.
