Timely liver transplant saves woman's life

A 40-year-old woman, who suffered multiple organ failure, got a new lease of life after she underwent timely liver transplant in a city hospital.
Rajni was diagnosed with dengue and jaundice and was admitted to the hospital in the last week of November. She was immediately put on medication. However, due to delay in proper treatment, Rajni's lungs got infected and her kidneys and liver failed.
"She started bleeding from her nose and mouth. She was put on ventilator without delay and given dialysis to support her body functions," said Dr Sanjay Singh Negi, Senior Consultant and Director of Liver Transplantation at BLK Super Speciality Hospital.

"We had to make a quick decision to go for a liver transplantation as the patient was critical. Lungs can be supported by ventilator and kidneys by dialysis, but liver cannot be treated or healed once damaged, hence a transplant was necessary," Dr Negi said.
Rajni's husband had different blood group and her children were too young for the procedure to donate liver. However, her 25-year-old nephew Harsh Bhatiya was found to be a match. The surgery started in the evening and continued the entire night.
It took 15 hours for the team to complete the transplant. The whole procedure since admission took 36 hours.

"Rajni was kept under observation for four-five weeks and much to our delight, she started showing signs of improvement. After a 45-day stay at the hospital, Rajni was discharged and is keeping well now," said Dr Negi.
