Humayun Kabir, Trinamool Congress leader from Murshidabad district, who failed to get a party ticket for the Berhampore seat, today expressed opposition to the fielding of singer Indranil Sen for it.
Stating that Sen was pitted against Congress strongman and WBPCC President Adhir Chowdhury from the seat, Kabir, who was made a minister after he switched over to the TMC from the Congress, told PTI "Through media I have appealed to our party supremo to replace Sen with a full time party worker."
Claiming that the people and party workers were opposed to the nomination of Sen, he said "You need to have a strong political candidate who knows the constituency like the back of his hand to take on a candidate like Adhir Chowdhury."
Asked whether his outburst was for not getting ticket for the seat, Kabir said, "No nothing of that sort. I have never said I want to be the candidate, but if the people of the area wants me to be the candidate what can I do?"
Kabir said if the party had wanted to nominate a celebrity to the seat, then Tollywood superstar Dev, who was given party ticket from Ghatal, should have been given ticket from Berhampore.
Kabir, a former Congress MLA from Rejinagar in the district and a Chowdhury loyalist had switched over to TMC in 2012 after he was given a ministerial berth.
After he lost his seat in a by-election, he lost his ministerial post.
