Trinamool Congress' student wing, TMCP, today said it does not support the HRD Ministry's no-detention policy in schools and intends to educate students on the merit of its stand.
TMCP state president Ashok Rudra said that the no-detention policy would do away with the evaluation system till class eight.
"There needs to be an evaluation system for the students, else it will bring down the quality of education and the benchmark of the students," Rudra said.
Rudra said that the TMCP earlier this month had expressed its opposition to the policy with the state government.
He said there was a need to raise awareness among the masses, especially students, about the pitfalls of the policy.
The West Bengal government had written to the Centre urging for scrapping of the no-detention policy in schools yesterday.
Accepting the Centre's proposal of revoking the policy of automatic promotions till Class VIII under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, the state School Education Department had written to the Union HRD Ministry that the existing system had led to deterioration of educational standards in Class IX.
