The film is based on a TV series which ran from 1964-68.
Starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, the series followed the exploits of two secret agents, who work for a fictitious secret international espionage and law-enforcement agency called U.N.C.L.E.
Earlier, George Clooney was supposed to star in the film and Steven Soderbergh ready to direct.
Clooney dropped out because he needed surgery on his neck and back. Soderbergh followed suit.
The studio finally took the project to Ritchie and his producing partner Lionel Wigram.
Cruise finished working on 'All You Need Is Kill', directed by Doug Liman. His next project is Joseph Kosinski-directed 'Oblivion'.
