No one was reported hurt in the mishap.
The cargo train coming towards Bilaspur from Pendra derailed near Tarbahra railway station, which is around 100 kms from Bilaspur station, Bilaspur Railway Division's Chief Public Relation Officer R K Agrawal told PTI.
"However, no injuries were reported due to the incident," he said.
The train departed Pendra railway station at around 5.20 pm.
When it was about to cross Tarbhara, the driver learnt about a brake failure, after which he diverted the train to a dead-end track to avert any major mishap.
After the incident, regular routes of Sarnath Express, Amakantak Express and Nawtanwa Express trains were changed, while the Durg-Amarkantak Express had to be cancelled.
Senior railway officials rushed to the site and repair operations have begun, he said, adding that movement of trains on the route is likely to resume by tomorrow afternoon.
