People from different sections of society today paid tributes to former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh on the occasion of his death anniversary.
A prayer meeting was held to mark the occasion where the work done by the former chief minister to eliminate terrorism from Punjab was also remembered.
Functions were held by Congress members across the state in memory of Beant Singh.
Among the family members of the late chief minister who were present for the prayer meeting at the Memorial Complex here were his son Tej Parkash Singh, grandson and MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and MLA Gurkirat Singh. Nobody from the state government made it to the prayer meeting.
Bittu said that the state government should do the needful to keep the memories of martyrs alive.
Beant Singh was assassinated on August 31, 1995, by a suicide bomber outside the Punjab Secretariat complex in Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, reports in Amritsar said that the assassin of Beant Singh was honoured posthumously at Akal Takht. Suicide bomber Dilawar Singh had assassinated Beant Singh. Members of Akali Dal Amritsar led by Simranjit Singh Mann, who were present at Akal Takht, raised slogans for a separate Sikh homeland on the occasion.
