Trinamool questions govt over Sanskrit move

Trinamool Congress questioned the government over its move to replace German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, saying an unnecessary controversy had been created by it.
"The entire controversy over teaching German language was unnecessary. What is the harm if KV (Kendriya Vidyalayas) students learn German," TMC leader Saugata Roy said in the Lok Sabha.
He made the remarks while participating in a discussion on School of Planning and Architecture Bill.
The Board of Governors (BoG) of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), headed by HRD Minister Smriti Irani, had in its meeting on October 27 decided that "teaching of German language as an option to Sanskrit will be discontinued herewith". German has been kept as an additional subject for students.

The decision is expected to affect over 70,000 students across 500 KVs from classes 6 to 8 who will be asked to switch from German to Sanskrit.
