CPM MP Jitendra Choudhury today pressed for preservation of tribal languages and dialects through a law, saying these are important for national integration.
The MP from Tripura was participating in a debate on private member's bill -- 'The 'Sixth Schedule to the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2015 -- in the Lok Sabha.
The bill envisages more financial and administrative powers for the autonomous district councils (ADCs) to ensure overall development of tribal regions, most of which are in the Northeast.
Prahlad Singh Patel (BJP) termed the bill as "very dangerous" and said he cannot support it.
Asserting that fissiparous law create dissent among the masses, Singh said such laws should be weakened and this can be done through development.
"We have incurred a lot of loss due to Sixth Schedule. We have to do away with law which is restricting our growth," he said.
Nishikant Dubey (BJP) said there was no fixed criteria of nomination in the bill and asked "Who will nominate the member?"
He felt that there was a need for more comprehensive bill.
In the Sixth Schedule, he said, there was no anti-defection law although "we have talked about it (anti-defection law).
