Two students of Patna-based Chankaya National Law University (CNLU) went mising in the Gandak river near Konhara Ghat at Hajipur in Vaishali district early today.
The spot is around 20 km north of Patna and divers from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are searching for the missing students.
Station House Officer (SHO) of Hajipur Town police station Jitendra Kumar said, "Shriyal Paras of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Abhishek Raj of Ara in Bihar were part of a group of eight students of CNLU which had come last night for picnick at Hajipur."
"They were enjoying their time when the missing duo decided to take a bath in the Gandak River, which is now in spate. They jumped into the river and were swept away," he said.
The police were informed by the other members of the group and NDRF divers were called in.
Terming the incident "most unfortunate" CNLU Registrar S P Singh said both the students were in the third year of the five-year law course and were currently writing their annual examinations.
"According to our information, the group of students left their hostel at about 8 pm. They did not inform the hostel warden, which is mandatory. We were informed about the incident around 5.30 am," Singh said.
Meanwhile, family members of Raj have reached Hajipur while those of Paras are reported to be on their way to Patna to reach the spot, the police said.
