Kalahandi district and sessions court judge Bikram Kesari Pattnaik convicted Someswar Pan and Nakmudia Dumb. However, as Dumb died on July 20, 2011, the lone surviving convict Pan would have to undergo life imprisonment, the court ordered.
The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Pan and in default two additional months of rigorous imprisonment.
Jogi Sahar had opposed the sacrifice of a goat during a religious festival at Bandakutru village of Kalahandi and died when he was attacked by angry villagers led by Pan and Dumb on April 2, 1992.
However, the relatives of the deceased filed a criminal revision case before Odisha High Court which directed fresh trial by the Kalahandi district and sessions judge against Pan and Dumb.
