Two militants of the Meghalaya based Garo National Liberation Front (GNLA) were killed in an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district of Assam, the police said today.
An improvised explosive device, three grenades, and two 9 mm pistols were recovered from the slain ultras after the encounter last night, they said.
Based on intelligence inputs, the Armys's Red Horns Division and the police launched a joint operation near Kongkhal village close to the Assam-Meghalaya border and the two were killed in the operation, a Defence release said.
Areas along the inter-state border have seen a sudden spurt in subversive activities by insurgent groups such as ULFA (Independent) and GNLA in recent weeks, the release said.
The two outfits were coordinating in causing violence through IEDs to establish their existence in the run up to the Independence Day next week, it said, adding, the forces stepped up area domination along the border to curb free run of the groups and instill confidence among the local people.
