The Uttarakhand High Court today sought a reply from the Centre for not allowing cooperative banks to accept deposits of banned high value currency notes saying this was causing problems to farmers who were mostly customers of such banks.
Hearing a PIL filed by advocate Neeraj Tiwari, questioning the government on non acceptance of scrapped notes by district cooperative banks, a division bench comprising Chief Justice K M Joseph and Justice Alok Singh asked the Centre to file a reply by Tuesday.
The PIL contended that no transactions can be made in the accounts of district cooperative bank account holders as a result of which farmers were facing problems.
It was pleaded that after demonetisation, scrapped notes were banned to be deposited in district cooperative banks.
Advocate for the petitioner C K Sharma further pleaded that the majority of cooperative bank account holders are farmers who require money for the ongoing sowing season.
