The UN Security Council will hold closed-door talks to discuss the unravelling situation in Gaza, a diplomat said, after 15 Palestinians died in the conflict's worst single day of violence since a war in 2014.

The meeting, to be held at the request of Kuwait, will begin at 6:30 pm, the diplomat said on condition of anonymity. The "informal consultations" would discuss the latest developments in Gaza and the situation in the Middle East, the source added.

Clashes erupted today as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border in a major protest, leaving 15 Palestinians dead and hundreds more wounded in the conflict's worst single day of violence since the 2014 Gaza war.

Israel's military targeted three Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip with tank fire and an air strike after what it said was an attempted shooting attack against soldiers along the border that caused no injuries.

The health ministry in Gaza said 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.
