An undertrial sharp shooter of Vicky Tyagi gang of Muzaffarnagar today escaped from the custody of police while being escorted back to Dasna jail after a court hearing here.
Ruchin Jaat, who was booked by Modi Nagar Police in a car robbery case last year, escaped after throwing red chili powder in the eyes of police constable Jitendra Chandel, who was escorting him back to Dasna jail, Senior Superintendent of Police K S Emmanuel said.
According to the police constable, after the hearing, Jaat requested him to let him meet a relative near the court gate.
On reaching the gate, two associates of Jaat came in car and both of them got in it. When the car reached near nullaha of Sadarpur village, Jaat threw chili powder in Chandel's eyes and fled after pushing him out of the vehicle, police said.
Police have initiated probe in the matter.
The constable has been suspended and an FIR registered against him as he allegedly conspired with Jaat and helped him in absconding, the SSP said.
Meanwhile, police have been alerted in the western part of the state to nab the absconding accused.
Muzaffarnagar SSP Deepak Kumar said that police in Muzaffarnagar district have launched a manhunt for Jaat, who belongs to Datiyana village of this district.
