While nine undertrials, accompanied by nine jail guards had come to the hospital for different clinical tests in the morning, one Pritam Bose (25) escaped from custody allegedly by throwing chilli powder in the eyes of one of the guards, Choudwar jailor Sitanshu Kumar Deb said.
A native of Cuttack, Pritam was in jail since April 21 this year after he was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on charges of dacoity and violation of provisions under Arms Act.
"A manhunt has been launched with the help of Commissionerate police to nab the escapee," Deb said.
Eight other undertrials, taken to the hospital, were brought back to the jail soon after the incident, the jailor said.
