Undeterred by SC order, farmers continue to fill up SYL canal

Farmers in villages of Rupnagar, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib continued to fill up the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal till late evening today, despite the Supreme Court's directions on maintenance of status quo on land meant for the canal.
Farmers in Karori, Inderpura and Saini Majra villages were seen using heavy machinery to fill up the water body.
Local SAD and Congress leaders supported them on grounds that no written order has so far been received from Supreme Court, officials of the two parties said.
The local leaders also assured farmers that no action would be taken against them.
However, at most places in Punjab, farmers stopped filling up the canal following the Supreme Court's orders, official sources said.
