Defending champion and top seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland today expressed satisfaction after winning his first match of the season at the ATP Chennai Open tennis tournament here today.
"I am happy winning the first match of new season. It is a good win for me. Look forward to the next one. I am happy in the way that I played today," said Wawrinka over an hour after he won his pre-quarterfinal match against a fighting 18-year-old Borna Coric of Croatia 6-1 6-4.
"It was not easy match for sure. I think the first set was quick. I was playing very well and playing aggressively. You do not get easy match on tours. It is just that how you play can make whether you played well and whether it was easy or hard. I think I did what I have to, especially from the beginning," said the world number four.
"When I was serving well and putting pressure on him playing from my backhand. Going by all this, I am happy with my first match of the new season. I am now looking forward to the next, which will be a completely different match," added the reigning Australian Open champion.
On his unforced errors, Wawrinka said "generally, I did not do many mistakes and played aggressively. I was trying to make him move and not giving him any room for counter attack. I did bring in my special, the backhands."
On his quarterfinal against Gilles Muller, he said "Muller is a completely a different player. He is known for serving big and making a lot of serve and volley. I will have to play really well if I have to beat him."
He is also playing doubles in the tournament.
"I enjoy to play doubles. I always play doubles with my friends as I could keep on the dialogues and play as a team to play doubles. It can help me a lot in general especially at the beginning of the year. I get to improve my rhythm and tried to play more inside the court and can find to change in my singles play. I always take positives from any situations," he added.
