WBHRC chairman takes suo moto cognisance of student's death
Press Trust of India Kolkata West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly today took suo motu cognisance of the death of a student after being beaten up by his teacher in school.
Ganguly directed South 24 Parganas district superintendent of police Praveen Triparthy to file a complete report on the incident in three weeks time.
Bapi Joardar, a class III student of Nirdeshkhali Shisu Sikha Kendra in Basanti area of the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas, fell ill on May 17 and died in a government hospital in Kolkata the next day after being physically punished by his teacher.
Champa Rani Mondal, a teacher of the school had banged the nine-year-old boy's head against the wall for his alleged lapses in class.
Mondal is in jail custody for 14 days since May 18.
