West Bengal Human Rights Commission today sought a police report about the assault of a college principal at Itahar allegedly by a group of Trinamool Congress workers after a party leader's wife was caught cheating during an examination on August 27.
College principal Swapna Mukherjee, wife of former state minister Srikumar Mukherjee, today met the commission chairman Ashok Ganguly here and told him that police have not yet taken any step to arrest the attackers who not only assaulted her but also went on a rampage in the college in North Dinajpur district.
"We are passing days in panic and the police have not taken any step to arrest the miscreants," Mukherjee told reporters after the meet.
Officials said the commission had sought a report from the top police authority about the steps it had taken to arrest the attackers and would meet tomorrow to decide on its course of action on the matter.
The commission chairman said WBHRC registrar was looking into the matter.
The principal and invigilating teachers of Meghnad Saha college were attacked by some people after a local Trinamool Congress leader's wife was caught cheating during B A part-I examination in the college under Gaur Banga University.
A group of Trinamool Congress workers arrived and demanded that her copy be returned, sources said.
When that demand was rejected, they assaulted Mukherjee and two other teachers, including a woman, the principal alleged.
The examinee is the wife of Trinamool Congress leader and North Dinajpur zilla Parishad member Gautam Pal, college officials said.
