Western Command remembers fallen heroes on Vijay Diwas

A wreath-laying ceremony was organised by the Western Command of the Army here today to commemorate the victory of Indian armed forces in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
To mark Vijay Diwas, the solemn ceremony was organised at the 'Veer Smriti' at Western Command Headquarters here, a defence spokesperson said.
Lt Gen K J Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command, former Chief of Army staff Gen V P Malik (Retd), and a number of veterans and serving soldiers laid wreaths in honour of valiant martyrs, he said.
As part of the Vijay Diwas celebrations, a befitting tribute was also paid to the renowned hero of 1971 War, 2nd Lt Arun Khetrapal, by Lt Gen Singh, Lt Gen S R Ghosh (Retd) and other senior veterans and officials of 17 Poona Horse, at Khetrapal Memorial in Chandimandir Military Station.
The Veer Naries and kins of Martyrs of the tricity were felicitated by Anita Singh, Regional President of Army Wives Welfare Association, the spokesperson said.
It was on this day, 43 years ago that over 90,000 Pakistani troops surrendered to Indian armed forces during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
Major battles were fought all along the Western front resulting in comprehensive defeat of the Pakistani Army, the Spokesperson added.
