Irked by constant arguments with her husband for refusing to visit his native village for celebrating Bakrid, a 39-year-old woman allegedly set herself ablaze in her house in Jafrabad area of north-east Delhi today.
The woman, Rukhsana, is battling for her life at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries, police said.
The woman's husband Hasmuddin Khan, a Subedar in 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifle Battalion, had gone to his native village near Bulandshahar for celebrating Bakrid, and had asked her to come to the village along with their two sons so that they could celebrate the festival together.
Rukhsana, however, turned down his proposal citing sons' studies, said a police official.
After Hasmuddin returned home yesterday, he had an argument with Rukhsana over the issue.
After the two had an argument over the issue this morning, Rukhsana closed herself in the bathroom, poured kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze, police said.
When her 21-year-old son spotted the flames and heard screams, he broke the bathroom's door and rushed his mother to the nearby GTB hospital, the official said.
Hasmuddin and his sons had been questioned and further investigations are on, police said.
