WR collects over Rs 10 crore fine from ticketless travellers

The Western Railway (WR) has collected over Rs 10 crore as fine from ticketless travellers last month, a statement issued here today said.
"Western Railway conducted regular checks during May 2016, wherein more than 2.29 lakh cases of ticketless/irregular travel, including unbooked luggage cases were detected, resulting in the recovery of Rs 10.12 crore," the statement said.
During the period, 894 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected while 1,171 beggars and unauthorised hawkers, etc were apprehended, evicted and fined, while 128 persons were sent to jail, the WR statement said.
It also said that during this period, 198 checks were conducted against touts and other anti-social elements. As a result, 363 persons were apprehended and prosecuted and fined under various sections of the Railways Act.

With a view to curb the menace of ticketless travelling, the WR comes down heavily on such travellers regularly by conducting such intensive campaign against them, it said.
Urging all rail users to buy proper railway ticket and travel with dignity, the WR also said that its endeavour is to provide better services to its bona fide rail users and officers are closely monitoring the revenue loss due to ticketless travel and such other irregularities.
The WR is divided into six operating divisions--Mumbai, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Ratlam.
