In a joint operation with Dadra and Nagar Haveli police, Delhi police have arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly used to extort money from people across the country by posing as a senior Income Tax official.
The accused, Rohit Kumar, was arrested from his home district Shajahanpur in Uttar Pradesh yesterday.
A mobile phone used for extortion has been recovered from Kumar, who used to pose as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax to cheat people, police said.
"A request was received from SP, Dadra & Nagar Haveli to locate and arrest the unknown extortionist, who is blackmailing people by posing as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax posted in Hyderabad.
"Kumar used to threaten the victims to invest money in insurance policies. He threatened them that if they failed to invest they will have to face serious consequences such as IT raids," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
A complaint of extortion was received at Silvasa Police Station and the case was registered. On receipt of the request, a joint team was constituted and tasked to nab the accused.
"A joint team rushed to Shajahanpur, UP and arrested the accused, Rohit, from his native place yesterday. He has been remanded to six-day transit remand for taking him to Dadra & Nagar Haveli," said Yadav.
