"We are trying to ascertain the identity of the about 20-year-old youth clad in jeans and half-shirt. He was found hanging from a 'gamcha' (thin towel) fastened to a branch of the tree by a canal," ASP Manoj Kumar Tiwary said.
It could be a case of suicide, but all angles were being investigated to find out the reasons for the death of the youth, he said.
Since the area is known for Maoist activities, police have also been investigating whether the rebels had any hand in the incident.
