B Raju (35), a YSRCP member, was the husband of village sarpanch B D V Lakshmi.
The crime took place within the limits of Rolugunta police station.
Raju was returning home at around 10.45 pm when a group of unidentified persons attacked him with sharp-edged weapons and fled from the spot.
Police sub-inspector K Govinda Rao said political or business rivalry could have led to the murder.
