The Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Overseas Development Authority of the UK have decided to collaborate to undertake client-oriented research on agriculture and related areas in India. Priority will be given to participatory research on a demand-led agenda.

Strategic areas for such research were identified at a meeting attended by ICAR director-general R S Paroda and his 47 colleagues and 15 ODA experts led by manager of Renewable Natural Resources Research System programme John Barrett. These included rainfed farming, intensively irrigated high production system, fisheries and aquaculture and animal production systems.

The meeting recognised the need to commission a study on the semi-urban agriculture research system for the National Capital Region where land and environmental issues were becoming crucial.

The outcome of the ODA study on the Hubli-Dharwar semi-urban interface in Karnataka will be available by July and may prove useful for planning land and water resources in the NCR.
