India produced 28.29 million tonnes of crude oil between April 1997 and January 1998 compared with 27.30 million tonnes in the same period a year earlier, a petroleum ministry statement said yesterday.

The production target for the period was 28.181 million.

The level was achieved despite the North-East and Gujarat regions failing to meet targets during January, an official release said yesterday.

Shortfall in Gujarat was because of leakages and cholinf in Gandhar and Ankleshwar fields and also the decline in number of wells in Ahmedabad and Ankleshwar.

Refinery production in terms of crude throughput in 10 months was 54.15 million tonne, slightly over the planned target of 52.176 million tonne.

In January 1998, refineries processed 5.57 million tonnes of crude compared with 5.40 million in the same month of 1997, it said.

Most refineries except Digboi, Guwahati and Visakhapatnam units exceeded the planned target during January.

The shortfall in Guwahati was due to power interruption on January 16 and 24, whereas in Digboi, it was due to fire at parafin wax plant on February 9.

The HPCL Visakhapatnam plant continued shutdown of all units since a major fire in September 1997. The cumulative supplies of natural gas during April-January 1998 were 8.5 per cent higher at 16385 million cubic meter over last year, the release said.
