Land Acquisition For Refinery Contested

The land, which is being acquired under the Maharashtra Industrial Development (MID) Act, is reportedly for the Hind-ustan Oman Petroleum Corp refienery and other industries expected to come up in the wake of the Dabhol power project.

Twenty-three villages are expected to be affected by the acquisition which, according to a local oragnisation, will entail displacement of 25,000 people.

The villagers fear that 2,000 acres of the area earmarked for acquisition will go to HOPC while the rest will comprise primarily chemical industries.
