Vice-chairman of the Sanmar group, N Kumar, has taken over as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) president for the year 1997-98.

Kumar formally took over charge from outgoing president Shekhar Datta at the Confederations national council meeting yesterday.

Rajesh Shah, managing director of Mukand Ltd, has taken over as the vice-president for 1997-98.

Kumar is the honorary trade representative of the Singapore Trade Development Board in Chennai, and senior vice-president of the All-India Management Association (AIMA).

An electronics engineering graduate, Kumar heads the Rs 1,500 crore Sanmar group which has diverse interests in chemicals, engineering, electronics, financial services, cement, property development, shipping and textiles.

The group operates manufacturing facilities in over 20 locations in the country, and one in Singapore.
