Pivotals Recover Partially On Selective Fii Purchases

The Sensex staged a moderate recovery on selective purchases by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and buying by speculators on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) yesterday. Market sources said, some of the illiquid B1 stocks witnessed speculative activities, though they did not show much price movement.

The 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened higher at 3,414.59 and rose to the intra-day high of 3,446.33, before closing at 3,437.64 as against the last close of 3,401.88, netting a gain of 35.76 points. The BSE-100 index improved by 14.48 points to 1,479.63 from its last close of 1,465.15. The BSE-200 and the Dollex were quoted moderately up at 327.76 and 140.39. According to market sources the FIIs brought stocks like P&G, L&T, BSES, MTNL and ITC, while domestic institutions buying included Colgate, Telco and Bajaj Auto. Market sources said the domestic institutions continued to book profit in HLL.

ITC attracted the highest turnover of Rs 285.35 crore, followed by Tata Tea at Rs 113.28 crore, Castrol at Rs 82.21 crore, RIL at Rs 64.95 crore and HLL at Rs 40.93 crore. The ITC scrip bounced back to shoot up by Rs 12.25 to Rs 627.75. RIL firmed up by Rs 3.10 to Rs 152.90, SBI-new by Rs 2.60 to Rs 242.10, Telco by Rs 1.70 to Rs 239, Castrol by Rs 13 to Rs 672.25 and Tata Tea by Rs 8.50 to Rs 423.50. Tisco was up at Rs 122.20. P&G spurted by Rs 21 on FII buying to close at Rs 564, Sesa moved up by Rs 19 to close at Rs 293.

Among the scrips that remained static after having reached the 25 per cent weekly circuit filter limit were Lakme at Rs 189.10, Merind at Rs 158.20. The volume of business transacted also witnessed substantial drop to Rs 829.43 crore from Wednesdays turnover of Rs 1,095.87 crore. Brokers expect the market to remain steady today as it has witnessed renewed speculative as well as FIIs interest.
