The lacklustre trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) continued to drag indices downwards yesterday. The NSE-50 closed at 976.10, a loss of 1.55 points over the previous close. The Nifty touched an intra-day high of 980.75, saw a low of 973.10 before closing at 976.10.

The bourse clocked a total traded turnover of Rs 938.02 crore for the day with 3.54 crore shares changing hands. The LML scrip was the highest gainer on renewed buying interest from institutional investors. The scrip gained 7.42 per cent and closed at Rs 105 over its last close of Rs 97.75. the scrip saw a trading turnover of Rs 41.60 crore.

The other major gainers were, Telco at Rs 233.55 over its previous close of Rs 225.40, gaining 3.62 per cent. The HPCL scrip came in for heavy selling before closing at Rs 412.35 over its last close of Rs 425.10. The Midcap index also closed down at 1,074.80, a loss of 6.55 over its previous close. The ITC scrip clocked a turnover of Rs 298.76 crore and closed at Rs 590.65 over its last close of Rs 594.95.

Yesterday being the last day of the settlement, the market is likely to go up on short covering, sources said. The trading remained lacklustre in the absence of institutional support. The domestic institutions also remained passive players and the market was mainly driven by operators.

Hectic activity was seen at the Aptech counter. The scrip closed at Rs 600 over its previous close of Rs 641.20, a 6.43 per cent fall. The company announced a 1:1 bonus yesterday and came down mainly on account of profit booking. The Sterlite scrip also saw hectic activity, gaining by 7 per cent. The scrip shot up to Rs 153.95 over its last close of Rs 143.90. It clocked a turnover of Rs 2.94 crore. The Castrol scrip also came in for some hammering, closing at Rs 655.35 over its previous close of Rs 673.15.

Meanwhile, share prices eased marginally on the OTCEI on fresh selling pressure. The OTCEI composite index opened at 113.89 and closed at 113.83, a marginal fall of 0.06 point from the last close of 113.89.
