Shares Improve On Speculative Buying In Select Counters

The equity prices improved further on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) yesterday following speculative buying in the ITC counter by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and local institutions.
The FIIs made good purchases of 5 lakh in ITC and made a total purchase of about 25 crore with buying of 62 crore and selling of 37 crore, according to the market circles.
Reflecting the mixed trend, the BSE sensitive index opened at 3737.96 points, touched a day's high of 3767.21, showed a low of 3713.48 before finally closing at 3741.22 points, showing a net gain of 0.69 points.
Meanwhile, the BSE-100 index declined by 0.22 points to 1614.74 against the previous close of 1614.96. The BSE-200 and Dollex indices also closed lower by 0.49 and 0.18 points to 363.92 and 169.15 against the previous close of 364.41 and 169.33 points respectively.
The ITC featured the highest trading in terms of turnover by Rs 233.39 crore in the total volume of business of Rs 628.60 crore. Other active scrips were SBI-new (Rs 146.66 crore), Reliance Industries Ltd (Rs 73.45 crore), Telco (Rs 26.65 crore) and Bajaj Auto (Rs 24.13 crore).
The market leader, ITC spurted by 13 to 421.25. RIL lost by 2.75 to 293.50, SBI (new) by 1.25 to 303 and Tata Steel by 1.50 to 173.
Among other shares, Bajaj Auto dropped by 29.50 to 885.75, Bhel by 3 to 422, ACC by 16 to 1161, Glaxo by 1.25 to 333, Ind Hotel by 6.25 to 615, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd by 1.75 to 136, ABB by 5.75 to 651.25, BPCL by 8.25, STO 405.50, Crompton Greaves by 1.25 to 74, Esab India by 5.50 to 97.50, Escorts by 1.25 to 81.50, Hero Honda by 8 to 464, Hind Motor by 2.25 to 14, Bombay Dyeing by 1.25 to 94.50, ITC Bhadra by 1.25 to 49.75 and Thermax by 6.50 to 279.50.
