The central trade unions have sought immediate convening of Indian Labour Conference to consider the issue of a comprehensive industrial relations law.

In a joint statement, they condemned the action of employers representatives who submitted their views on Trade Union (Amendment) Bill to the Union labour minister directly, instead of submitting it to the chairman of the bipartite committee as agreed upon by the unions and employers. It is shocking that the employers representatives had gone back on their promise, they said.

The unions said the bipartite committee did not come to an agreement since the employers representatives refused even to accept the unanimous recommendations of the Ramanujam committee and pressed for including extraneous issues relating to structural adjustment programme.
