Amit stuns Olympic champion as India post biggest ever tally

Upcoming boxer Amit Panghal stunned the reigning Olympic champion to add the extra glitz to a day on which the Indian contingent recorded their best ever tally even as the bridge team won gold while the women's squash and men's hockey teams added silver and bronze respectively at the 18th Asian Games on Saturday. On the penultimate day of the Games, India are sitting at the eighth spot with 15 gold, 24 silver 30 bronze for a total of 69 medals. India have thus surpassed their previous highest tally of 65 medals which they registered at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou. Amit's title winning effort also enabled the Indian contingent to equal the best ever gold medal count which came at the inaugural edition way back in 1951. Read full article here

'Building Bridges': When Asiad gold medallist Bardhan fought perceptions of gambling

The incident happened some years back and it's still vivid in the memory of Asian Games gold medallist bridge player Pranab Bardhan. The 60-year-old Bardhan was then getting ready to represent India in an international competition in Montreal but he needed to renew his passport. But the officer at the passport office, scrutinising his application form made an allegedly offensive remark. "He (passport officer) asked me, aap jua khelne Canada jaa rahein hain (you are going to Canada to take part in gambling). I told him you have not read my file properly. He was an educated man but still did not know, it's a sport and not gambling. Sensible people would not think like that," Bardhan, who today became India's oldest gold medal winner at the Asiad, spoke about how perceptions rule our society. Read Full story here

Asiad success will popularise bridge among youth, says India coach

Bridge as a game will gain popularity among the youth of the country after the Bengal duo of Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath De Sarkar bagged gold in the men's bridge pair competition at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, the teams non-playing captain and coach Debasish Ray said on Saturday. "Dreams come true. I just cannot express the joy in words. We were waiting for the moment for many years.
