The chase by the Lucknow Super Giants got off to as worse a start as was possible after Trent Boult removed KL Rahul off the very first ball of the over. In the same over he also got Krishnappa Gowatham out Leg Before Wicket.
From there on it was a total struggle for the Super Giants even as de Kock held one end the wickets kept falling from the other. Run scoring was hard and as a result, the required rate mounted and in that pressure de Kock was also out and in that same over Chahal also removed Krunal Pandya.
With 40 required off 13 balls, Chahal was hit for a six by Avesh Khan and the margin came down to 34 needed off the last two overs and then Marcus Stoinis hit Prasidh Krishna for 19 in the 19th over.
It all came down to the last six balls and Kuldeep Sen kept his nerves and defend those runs, giving away just a single off the first four balls, making it impossible to win it in the remaining two legal deliveries, although he was hit for a four and a six off the last two balls. But the match was won by three runs by Rajasthan Royals.
Earlier in the evening, after being asked to bat first, Rajasthan got off to a nice start as they made 42 in the first five overs without losing a wicket. But then they lost four quick wickets and were reduced to 67-4 before Ravichandran Ashwin and Shimron Htemyer added 68 off 51 balls to provide stability to the innings.
In a bizarre move, Ravichandra Ashwin decided to get retired out in the 19th over in what was a first-ever case of ‘retired out’ in IPL. Riyan Parag came in his place and courtesy of the brilliant 59 off just 36 balls from Hetmyer, Rajasthan reached a fighting total of 165/6 in their 20 overs.
