You learn from your failures, happy with experience gained in Tokyo Olympics: Bhavani Devi

While analysing her performance in the Tokyo Olympics, India fencer Bhavani Devi on Tuesday said she is content with her showing at the Games and will take learnings from this, and try to do better in the upcoming tournaments.

Bhavani had gone down against France's Manon Brunet in women's individual sabre 15-7 in the Round of 32 match on Monday. The experienced French fourth seed won the match very comfortably after Bhavani had defeated Tunisia's Ben Azizi Nadia to become the first Indian to win a match in fencing at Olympics.

"For me, I felt that I have given my best. Of course, I was a little disappointed after the second round, I always wanted to win a medal for India. It is not only in Olympics, I want to win medals everywhere. You learn from your failures, I accept what I have done in this Olympics. I am happy about all the experience I received during the process," Bhavani told ANI in an interview on Tuesday.

"You always improve at each competition, the journey to arrive in the Olympics was not easy. I worked hard and I finally represented India at the Olympics, I have learnt a lot, I will definitely work harder to do better in the coming tournaments," she added.

When asked about how she felt after winning her Round of 64 fixture against Nadia, Bhavani said: "Definitely yes, qualifying for the first time and then winning for the first time gives all the athletes energy to do better in the next events. For me, it is not just about round 1 or 2, I always want to have that medal. Anyhow, I exited in Round 32, but the support I received from people and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi motivated me, and it has given me the energy to work harder and give better performances in the coming tournaments."

I almost had him: Sharath on pushing mighty Ma Long to limit in his 'best' tournament ever

India's finest ever table tennis player, Sharath Kamal, feels he might have played the best match of his almost two-decade-old career despite ending on the wrong side of the result against the mighty Ma Long at the Tokyo Olympics.

Seldom one's best performance comes in a losing cause but it is different when one is facing arguably the greatest player of all time.

The 39-year-old showed against the reigning World and Olympic champion that he still remains at the top of his game.

The performance against the Chinese legend in the round of 32 has further convinced him to take him part in the Paris Olympics, which will be his fifth and are "only" three years away.

"I played the best game possible and that has been my best Olympic Games, simple because of the way I played. The only thing I would like to change here is the draw. If I had anybody else in this situation (other than Ma) and I had a real good shot at reaching the quarterfinals," the world number 32 told PTI.

Sharath was a tad surprised himself that he was able to pull off those lightening quick forehand and backhand winners with pinpoint precision, which was needed to unsettle "The Dragon".

The work he has put on his backhand over the last six months to make him a complete player was very much evident against Ma Long.

"The kind of pressure I was able to put him in, I almost had him," there was a slight disappointment in his voice as he boarded the bus back to the Games Village after playing the match of his life.

"I have not yet broken down the game tactically yet but it was more about putting the pressure on Ma (who played the first match of the competition).

"I was just unfortunate the I could not convert that third game, otherwise it would have been a very different match," he said referring to game he lost 11-13 after winning the second with a rocket-like cross court forehand.

Sharath, who had beaten three top-20 players in the 2015 Asian Cup in Jaipur, said his effort in Tokyo surpassed even that feat at home.

Olympics 2021 LIVE Naomi Osaka loses in straight sets to Marketa Vondrousova (Women's tennis roundup)

Four-time Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka's run at the Tokyo Olympic Games came to an end with the Japanese star losing to 2019 French Open runner-up, Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-4 in the third round on Tuesday,

With Naomi's exit, the top three players on the WTA singles rankings at the Olympics have all bowed out of the quadrennial showpiece.

While Australia's world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty had lost to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the opening match, No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus fell to Croatia's Donna Vekic in the second round on Monday, and now world No. 2 Naomi has lost in the third round.

With No. 4 Sofia Kenin of the US and No. 5 Bianca Andreescu of Canada not competing here, No. 6-ranked Elina Svitolina of Ukraine is now the highest-ranked player left in the draw.

Marketa took a 4-0 lead with a double break and finished the opening set in 24 minutes. But Naomi looked like she was warming up for the second set when she broke in the first game of the second set and then held for a 2-0 lead. But Marketa broke back for 2-all and broke the Japanese one more time in the last game of the match to snuff out Naomi's challenge.

The Czech player finished the match with just 10 unforced errors to Naomi's 32.

Meanwhile, there were upsets galore in late evening matches on Monday at the Ariake Tennis Park as Spain's Paula Badosa, Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck and Donna Vekic pf Croatia took out a trio of top-10 seeds to reach the third round at the Olympics.

Paula took out No. 6 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-3, 7-6(4), while Alison and Donna beat No. 10 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and No. 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, respectively.

Belgium's Alison came from a set down to beat world No.13 Petra, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, by winning the last 10 games. It was the 27-year-old's first win over a top-20 player in over three years, dating back to a victory over then-defending champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain at the Wimbledon in 2018. She'll have a rematch with the Spaniard in the next round.
