ABOUT TOKYO OLYMPICS 2020

The 2020 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, between July 23 and August 8. The Paralympic Games will take place between August 24 and September 5.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were initially set to begin on July 24, 2020, and to run until Aug 9, 2020. However, on March 24, 2020, the IOC announced that the Games would be officially postponed as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and international spectators would not be allowed. This is also the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled.

Despite taking place in 2021, the event retains the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes.

Tokyo is hosting the Summer Olympics for the second time. The city first hosted the Olympic Games in 1964. Tokyo is also the first city in Asia to host an Olympics twice.

Thirty-three sports will feature in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with medals in 339 events up for grabs across 42 venues. The Paralympics will feature 22 sports at 539 events across 21 venues.

The Summer Olympics 2020 will see a contingent of 115 athletes from India.

According to protocol, international athletes and support staff will be tested before departure and on arrival for the Games in Japan. The athletes and staff will have to follow bubble guidelines, apart from daily testing for Coronavirus.

The 2020 Games will see the inclusion of 3x3 basketball, freestyle BMX, and madison cycling.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 will see karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts, as well as the return of baseball and softball for the first time since 2008.
