Venture capital funding totals $48 million.

SpikeSource, a US-based open source IT infrastructure firm which has a significant development base in Bangalore, has raised $10 million through the venture capital route.

Intel Capital led this round and was joined by return backers CMEA Ventures, DAG Ventures, Fidelity Venture and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. With this, SpikeSource has raised $48 million, since being incubated in 2003.

SpikeSource was initially founded as a firm that would offer support to enterprises which run on open source as their main operating platform. The company, however, in the recent past has been focussing on providing a platform for independent software vendors to assemble, test, package and update open source, proprietary and hybrid software solutions. The company terms the platform as 'SpikeSource Solutions Factory'.

"The SpikeSource Solutions Factory fundamentally shifts the way software is developed and delivered," said Kim Polese, CEO of SpikeSource.

"Not only does it enable ISVs to bring to the market whole product solutions that are vertically certified for the entire solution stack, including the application, operating system and underlying hardware, but also allows ISVs to deliver certified solutions that are updated and maintained on an ongoing basis, providing end-customers with continuous quality assurance."

The company claims that this platform has been selected by the world's largest technology companies to certify and support applications for their platform that meet the standards for quality, security, interoperability, and maintainability.

"We are very excited about our investment in SpikeSource and its strategy in delivering the SpikeSource Solutions Factory platform," said Kleiner Perkins general partner Ray Lane, co-founder and chairman of SpikeSource. "This is an innovative solution bringing in automation to the challenge of assuring and maintaining the quality of software applications."
