Lucknow youngsters are the new ruler of digital habits

City's youth outsmart peers in internet activity, says TCS survey

Lucknow youth seem to have outsmarted their peers in major cities and even metros in digital habits and using social networking platforms.

A greater percentage of Lucknow youth are on popular social networking websites viz. Facebook and Linkedin than the corresponding national average.

About 94 per cent and 14 per cent of Lucknow youth are on Facebook and Linkedin compared to 89 per cent and 8.60 per cent of national average respectively.

These interesting facts have emerged in the TCS GenY Survey, the results of which were declared here on Wednesday.

Almost 18,200 students in the age group of 12-18 years across 14 Indian cities were surveyed. The cities are Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur and Pune.

The primary data was collected from participants by means of questionnaire at each of the locations during July-December 2013.

As per survey results analysis, over 95 per cent of Lucknow students own a mobile phone ahead of national average of about 87 per cent.

Besides, Lucknow youth more frequently posted on Facebook and had more friends than the national average.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) conducts the survey every year during the nationwide TCS IT Wiz programme to get a pulse of digital habits of students to capture the changing trends with a focus on technology and IT gadgets.

“The survey has indicated that Lucknow has been steadily bridging the digital divide and in many cases are excelling. The youth of Lucknow are second to none in the use of IT and modern gadgets,” TCS regional head Jayant Krishna said after announcing the results.

Almost 83 per cent students in Lucknow have internet access at home; 4 percent higher than the rest of India. For 71 per cent students in Lucknow, mobile phone is the most used gadget as against the all India average of 51 per cent.

In Lucknow, 73 per cent students own a laptop, whereas all India average is 55 per cent.
