C'garh Housing Board declares highest service tax under VCES

Government owned Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has declared highest service tax of Rs 9.6 crore under Centre's VCES, with total tax of Rs 68 crore being declared by defaulters in Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh.
As Service Tax Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme (VCES) gives an opportunity to tax defaulters to pay their tax dues by December 31 this year, the Central Excise department today said a total of 538 tax defaulters came forward and declared service tax of Rs 68 crore covering Punjab, HP and UT Chandigarh.
"The largest declaration (under VCES) came from government's Chandigarh Housing Board which declared Rs 9.6 crore," Central Excise and Customs, Chief Commissioner (Chandigarh Zone), P S Pruthi told reporters here today.
A Chandigarh Administration undertaking CHB declared service tax payment of Rs 9.6 crore on account of construction of flats at Sector 51 and Sector 63 in UT Chandigarh under two housing schemes under VCES.
Among other large service tax payers included Rampur Hydro in HP at Rs 3.45 crore, A P Badal at Rs 3.29 crore in HP and Nabha power plant at Rs 1.65 crore in Punjab.
Chandigarh Central Excise department has active service tax base of 38,000 under its jurisdiction.
Observing that there were still a few sectors which were not coming forward to declare their dues, Pruthi said that the department would take action, including making arrest after the expiry of December 31.
"I think, there are sectors like construction job, marriage palaces, restaurants and manpower requirements vertical are still not coming foward," he said.
The department hoped that about 20 per cent service tax collection could further be made under VCES from this region.
VCES 2013 for payment of tax dues from October 2007 to December 2012 without interest, penalty and other legal proceedings including prosecution.
Taking tough stance against service tax defaulters, Central Excise department detcted tax evasion to the tune of Rs 104 crore so far in current fiscal with major defaulters being disovered included cable operator Fastway Transmission (Rs 6.92 crore), hotel Park Plaza (Rs 2.23 crore).
Central Excise department (Chandigarh) is eyeing service tax collections of Rs 2,200 crore in current fiscal as against mobilisation of Rs 1,670 crore in 2012-13.
Maximum tax collections came from services such as Business Auxiliary Service (Rs 112 crore), Rental Income (Rs 110 crore) and Transport (Rs 100 crore).
Among top service tax payers in the region were State Bank of Patiala (Rs 60 crore), Vodafone (Rs 60 crore), Ranbaxy (Rs 50 crore) and BSNL (Rs 20 crore), he said.
