Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems India Pvt Ltd (TTDI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan’s Toshiba Corporation, has opened a new line for production of switchgears such as gas insulated and solid insulated in Hyderabad. The new production line, built with an investment of Yen 3 billion (approximately $ 30 million), will boost manufacturing capacity for transformers up by 50 percent and allow TTDI to meet growing demand in India and globally.

Dr Katsutoshi Toda, chairman & managing director of TTDI, said, “In line with our ‘Make in India’ commitment, we have augmented capacity of existing lines and commenced new production lines with Yen 3 billion investment. TTDI will seek to expand its business through full-scale operations and provide cost-competitive products by localising procurement, design and manufacturing within India.”

TTDI currently manufactures small, medium and extra high voltage transformers. It will use the new line to start production of ultra high voltage transformers up to 1200kV and will also improve the manufacturing and operating efficiency of distribution transformers. The new line for gas-insulated switchgear will also accomplish the anticipated demand growth in this product, especially in urban areas.

“The comprehensive upgradation and expansion is as per our strategy of securing a 20 percent share of the Indian transmission & distribution (T&D) market in the coming years. We will also reinforce TTDI as a core T&D production base for other major markets, including Europe, ASEAN, and Africa,” informed Dr Toda.

In India, demand for T&D products is being spurred by rapid population growth and the need to upgrade its grid. Toshiba Transmission is not only focusing on bringing in technologies in India but also on the skill development by bringing the expertise of Japanese specialists which is resulting in a major change in the manufacturing process and product quality.

Toshiba Corporation began its manufacturing journey in India by acquiring Vijai Electricals’ power transformers, distribution transformers and switchgears businesses in Hyderabad, Telangana, in December 2013 and, thus, formed TTDI.
