About two years ago, I was travelling on work and was in the midst of an important meeting. Suddenly, I felt a pain in my lower abdomen and had no clues what it was or why. All I could do was request my colleague to drive me to the nearest hospital. The doctors asked me to run a battery of tests and scans to diagnose. The one thing that kept playing in my mind was “How am I going to manage the heavy medical bills, will I need surgery, do I have enough on my credit card, or should I borrow from a friend/colleague”. I did have high Blood pressure but no other pre-existing condition. Luckily for me, it wasn’t anything serious, but this got me thinking. I knew I had to plan my finances better, atleast to deal with unforeseen medical emergencies.

This incident had me taking a second look at life, with a new perspective in place.  A friend had been advising me to sign up for a Health Insurance policy for a year now, but I had shirked it off, thinking nothing could happen. Well, not any more!

If we were to look at the medical costs, not to forget the added expenses of surgeries and procedures, it adds up to quite a bit. Imagine if I had needed a complicated surgery and were to be admitted for more than just a couple of days. I would be left lost and penniless. All this had me looking at Health Insurance with new respect. I got to reading and understanding the nuances, which is when I Royal Sundaram Health Insurance Policy options.

Why Royal Sundaram Health Insurance policy?

You could be in your 20s or even 30s, feeling good and confident, with an “I am fit and therefore I cannot fall ill” attitude. You never know, something could happen out of the blue, and to avoid unpleasant surprises it is best to have a Health Insurance policy in place.

If I were to look at my lifestyle, it does scare me. I am working anywhere from 14-18 hours daily, eating out most times, very little to no exercise and top it off barely get the time to take a vacation or switch off from work or work related pressures. But the biggest reason for considering Health Insurance is that I have a wife and two kids who depend on me. Oh and let’s not to forget the horror stories I hear from colleagues and friends of my age or younger, heart attacks in late 20s, stroke and what not. Yes, the Health Insurance is the way forward!

The policy is a good way to cover medical emergencies and other health related issues as well.  The amount covered does depend on the kind of policy you sign up.

The various benefits offered by the Royal Sundaram Health Insurance Policy are pre and post hospitalization expenses, Maternity coverage, Domestic evacuations, Tax benefits [you can save tax under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act 1961], lifetime renewal to name a few.  They also offer cash benefit plans that will help you tide over expenses incurred during visits to the hospital and doctor consultations. Oh and there are policies that offer triple coverage if the person is admitted in the ICU. How cool is that?

What’s different about the Royal Sundaram health Insurance Policy?

When doing research on Royal Sundaram Health Insurance Policy, I noticed they have quite a few options. One of them is the Lifeline Elite Policy, which comes with a few additional advantages as well. If I was travelling abroad and was to fall ill or meet with an accident, this policy covers expenses [for about 11 illnesses] and goes the extra mile to pay for my return airfare (upto Rs 3 lakhs).

Few other interesting points to be noted about the Royal Sundaram’s Health Insurance Lifeline Elite Policy plan is that,

The policy will cover the cost of emergency domestic evacuation upto Rs 3 lakhs.
if you were expecting a baby, the policy covers vaccinations in the first year upto Rs 10,000.

Apart from all these benefits, I noticed they have a few optional ones that I can sign on, such as Hospital cash  [in case am hospitalized for more than 30days] and the option to include USA and Canada for worldwide Emergency hospitalization coverage [any treatment or procedure I might require on an emergency basis and cannot wait till I return home]. This would come in handy as I do travel to USA often on work.  The health insurance policy is such a boon for us frequent travellers.

Just as Life Insurance is something all of us get on board with no doubt, I feel health Insurance should become a priority. It does not matter what your family background is or health condition is today, you never know what could happen tomorrow. Best is to stay covered, one less worry.

Unlike earlier, you do not have to spend hours filling out forms, waiting at the Insurance office for a representative to explain the terms and conditions to complete the process.  Most policies are available online, all you need to do is spend a few minutes reading through the details, the benefits, and the terms. Once you have zeroed in on the health Insurance Policy you think is best suited for you and your family, download the form, fill it out and within a short span of time you will have someone writing to you from the company to complete the formalities.  That is how easy it is. Next time you see a friend or family member shrug away a health condition, ask them if they have health Insurance, if not explain its importance and make sure they sign on one right away. You never know, you might just have saved a family from trauma or from falling apart.
