Himachal Pradesh received only Rs 433.70 crore as disaster relief from the Centre in 2023 while the state government released Rs 4,495.43 crore to tackle the catastrophe, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said in the state assembly on Tuesday.
 

Replying to a debate on damage and loss due to monsoon disaster, Sukhu said the state suffered losses amounting Rs 9,000 crore during monsoon in 2023 and that he would again meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demand compensation for the loss.

Meghalaya earmarked Rs 50 cr to tackle drugs menace: Minister

The Meghalaya government has earmarked Rs 50 crore to combat the trafficking of drugs and set up more rehabilitation centres in the state amid an alarming increase in drug users, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh told the assembly on Tuesday.

 

Addressing the House during the Question Hour, he said there were around 3 lakh drug addicts in the state as per the latest survey.

 

"Since the launch of the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), the state government has earmarked Rs 50 crore to combat the menace of drug trafficking," he added.

 

Lyngdoh said that under DREAM, the state government has also planned to set up more deaddiction centres.

NSUI protests against Kangana Ranaut's remarks on farmers

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) held a protest outside Shashtri Bhawan here on Tuesday against BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's "derogatory" remarks on farmers' protests.

 

The student wing of the Congress demanded a public apology from Ranaut and her disqualification from Parliament over her remarks.

 

NSUI members gathered at the site carrying posters bearing slogans, such as "Anti-farmer BJP" and "Disqualify Kangana".

 

Ranaut stoked a controversy recently by suggesting that the farmers' protests against three contentious farm laws that have since been repealed could have led to a Bangladesh-like situation in the country if the top leadership was not strong enough.

 

In a video clip of her interview to "Dainik Bhaskar", Ranaut is heard alleging that "bodies were hanging and rapes were taking place" during the farmers' protests.

Odisha likely to receive heavy rainfall for 4 days from Aug 28

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of Odisha during the next four days.

 

In a special bulletin, IMD's Bhubaneswar centre said a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over east central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on August 29. It is likely to move towards south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts during the subsequent two days.

 

In view of the formation of the weather system, Odisha is likely to experience an active wet spell during August 28 to 31, it said.

 

The weather office has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts for Wednesday.

 

Besides, thunderstorms with lightning are expected at some places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts during the day, it said.

SGPC sends legal notice to producers of 'Emergency', demands apology for 'hurting' Sikhs

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sent a legal notice to the producers of the film "Emergency", which the apex religious body of the Sikhs claims misrepresents the character and history of Sikhs.

In the notice sent by Advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, legal advisor of SGPC, the producers of the film, including Kangana Ranaut, have been asked to remove the trailer released on August 14, from public and social media platforms and submit a written apology to the Sikh community.

Protesters, policemen clash during 'Nabanna Abhijan', BJP calls for strike on Wednesday

Clashes broke out between police and protesters at different parts of Kolkata and its neighbouring Howrah on Tuesday, as the agitators tried to make their way through barricades to march towards the West Bengal secretariat Nabanna'.

 

The protesters were attempting to reach Nabanna' to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape-murder of a doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here earlier this month.

 

Protesting brutal police action against peaceful protestors, the BJP called for a general strike on Wednesday. The ruling TMC denounced the decision claiming it was aimed at creating chaos.

 

Over 200 people were arrested in connection with the rally.

 

Clashes were reported at MG Road, Hastings Road and areas near the Princep Ghat alongside Santragachi and Howrah Maidan in which some protesters as well as 29 police personnel were injured.

12 members elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha, NDA touches majority mark

The ruling NDA reached majority mark in the Rajya Sabha today as nine BJP members and two from allies were elected unopposed in the by-polls for the upper house. With the nine, BJP's strength has reached 96, taking NDA to 112  in the upper house.

Among the three others to get elected unopposed were one each from NDA allies NCP faction of Ajit Pawar faction and Rashtriya Lok Manch. The ruling alliance also has the support of six nominated and one independent members.
 

One member of the Congress also got elected, taking the Opposition numbers in the Upper House to 85.
